What I hate! I hate that this kid is feeling like he is stupid even though he is extremely bright. I hate that this kid is being left behind in his ability to read and spell because of the way the school is teaching him to read. He did not get a good grasp on phonemic awareness but he is supposed to figure out on his own that words are made up of parts and the difference between a vowel and a consonant. I love that I get to make a difference in his life. 13 years ago, I was living a nightmare! My husband was unemployed! The direct sales company I had loved for do many years was about to bankruptcy! It was to be my biggest year! We were trying to relocate to Brenham but couldn't sell our house in houston! The triplets were 8 and doing a second round of 1st grade because they were still struggling with reading! I listened to this podcast today by Kirsten Boss and I could not help but think about how these techniques can help moms get their ADHD kids focused on getting the homework done. She talked about how we all have a check engine light within us that tells us when we are getting stressed to the max and we have to pay attention to that signal. What is the thing your child does when he is supposed to be doing homework but decides he needs to sharpen all the pencils first? What behavior is he doing to stall. How can we see him start to do these things and help him regulate his system ( because he is getting too stressed) It could be as simple as having him wash his hands in cold water! I was just talking to a client the other day about how herchild’s self esteem is affected because is he can't spell! He is embarrassed at school when he has to write things and turn then into his teacher. He is in 5 Th grade. Sometimes, we think spelling skills are not important because we Ga free e spell checks. I am fortunate, I know! We are family! It seems appropriate since this is how I feel about all children. When I do a book drive I have people that donate that do not even know me. They just care about kids and teachers! Having a business in the home is not easy because…. Sometimes you feel you have to work all the time because if you don’t work you don’t make money ! What do you read when you fly ✈️? On this last trip too Illinois I have been preparing for my presentations at the PTAC conference for preschool teachers. I am sharing with them things they can do with their preschoolers to help learning to read be successful for all kids.

One thing I am the most proud of! When I started with PaperPie in 2011, I had no idea the impact this business would have on my family. Does your child struggle with getting b and d confused? Many kids who struggle need to fill the difference between and d and b. In way ways they feel the same but they can feel that when the circle is on the left side it’s a d and when the circle is after the line it’s a d. There are lots of ways to help kids 🧒 👧 with this, but we never know which method is going to stick in their brains. 🧠 so we have to keep trying because one thing that might work for one kid might not work for another. Today 34 year ago I was… Checking into the hospital! It was the day I was going to have a baby. We had tried 9 days before but no he was not going to be forced to come. After they broke my water, two and half hours later he graced us with his presence! I will never forget when I was in labor when they realized the cord was pinched and he was not getting air and they told me to switch positions! Recently, he just switched positions in his career. He is now the boss of his own shop! He like me, has definite ideas for how things should be! I could not be more proud of him and his passion for being a dad and making the world a better place! Three tips to transform your child’s spelling skills : Many kids know how to read words but they have no idea why the word is spelled the way it is. I have a client that hates coming to me! ( surprisedly ha) He can read but he sometimes reads the wrong word and it messes up his comprehension. I wanted to find a book that we could read together so I could help him not just guess at the word but use the skills I have talk him to figure out the word. I showed him the Epic Adventure Series and his eyes lit up! He said, I read that book. “I got it at the book fair at my school. “ He loved it! He had no idea there were other books in the series! What I have learned in my sixty years on this earth! As toddlers/ babies we have to be detectives and figure out what they need. When they are preschoolers, we still have to be detectives and help them learn the vocabulary to share what they are feeling! Teach them to say the word angry! ( when they are angry) As teenagers we have to gradually teach them to look at their own behavior and learn how to communicate their feelings. When we talk about how the characters might be feeling we help them discover their own feelings! Then lastly, we have to look at ourselves and see what our behavior is trying to tell us. Why are we acting that way? Why does this scare me? What story am I telling myself about the situation? In 2015 my life changed! My phone rang! This person called me about joining my team! She was hesitate to join because she had been in another direct sales company and she had to meet quarterly requirements every quarter. She had a 1year old and was staying at home but used to be a middle school science teacher! She wanted to make extra money. I explained we don’t have quarterly requirements! After reading all the fine print she decided to take a risk! Today, she is a close friend of mine and one of the most successful people on my team! For the next 5 days I get to spend time with her and dream about our futures and what we want for our businesses and families! Want to help your child with spelling? They have to understand that each words have different sounds. Sometimes a word might have four sounds and five letters! ( why?) For kids who have trouble reading I teach them in spelling to break up the sounds with the spelling procedure! First they have to say each individual sound, then they have to say the letter each sound makes. Then they wrote the words. I use magna tiles to help them understand that tile is a sound. This is important because they may know the sound ( im) but they don’t understand that this sound is really the (i) sound and the (m). When they learn to just memorize words it gets more difficult when they don’t understand why the word says what it does! I have had dental problems my whole life. My mom was always with me and helped me make the best decision s! Its a hereditary thing! A few weeks ago I started feeling sensitivity in an area of my mouth! I started taking ibuprofen last Sunday but it started getting worse yesterday so I called the dentist and they got me in. They thought I only needed a crown. That was until this morning when I woke up and even with prescription pain medicine leftover from my other surgeries, I had to keep an ice packet on it until the appt at 1pm. At the dentist office we decided that I should go ahead and do a root canal. So the dentist numbed me and started drilling. Then she said when a tooth starts to die the roots get small so she would have to send me to a specialists. I was still in so much pain even though my mouth was numb. All I could think of is how I can stop the pain. I was in tears! ( and I delivered two children naturally) ! I am a pro at pain. I had to make a quick decision to and tell her to just pull the tooth! That is when I wished for my mom! I am so lucky I had her with me for 56 years! Thankful daughter Brooke is here to help me with my clients while I still try to work! Thankful for kids who want to learn! I pray that one day they will get the software system for electrically sending prescription corrected. Tonight I had one prescription at one place and the other two at another pharmacy! Just wanted to BE REAL everything is not always perfect in my life! It just is what it is! But I wish my mom was here especially in days like these! This will be my 6th implant! Do you have a resistant reader? You know it is essential for them to read, but you get tired of trying to motivate them. Here are a few things, you can do when they are resistant. 1. Could you tell them that you will get them started? You read a page and then have them read a page. Sometimes, you may just read two pages without them knowing because they are getting into the story, and guess what? The same thing will happen to them. They will keep reading and not know they should have stopped. 2. If they see a word they don't know, don't tell them the word- if you can, have them find the vowels, divide the word into syllables, and then read the word. I promise you that when you do this the next time you show them the word- they will remember how to read it. 3. The third tip is to have a word board this summer and post all your new words. I know you and your student will be amazed at how many words you collect! 4. Celebrate when you get to 50 words or whatever number you choose. She is an astute person! 🤷‍♀️ People with dyslexia never think of themselves as being astute! Astute means having or showing the ability to notice and understand things clearly! Mentally sharp or clever! It's an ironic description because, growing up with dyslexia, I did not feel very astute! 😭 However, now I know that I am astute in noticing behavior. I do believe that all behavior is a form of communication. Can you determine what the student is trying to tell you? I do believe this is my strength! Inside our brain we have what is called mini columns inside our cortex. Most kids mini columns are stacked straight up and down but kids with dyslexia have mini columns that are not vertical but perpendicular. There they made wider connections between how things work. Therefore especially for kids with dyslexia they need to know the why behind why things are as they are. It’s frustrating as a parent because you just know it but you don’t know why! Yesterday, was interesting because I think it was the first Mother’s Day I did not have most of my kids together! ( got to see one of five) It was ok because I know they will all be here next weekend for my birthday! It was also ok because I still have my dad and continue to make special moments with him. He treats me like a princess. It was also wonderful because I got earrings and flowers from my oldest boy and a candle from my granddaughter! I also got to have lunch with my good friend and her kids! She has always been an aunt to mine and comes to all their birthday celebrations so I loved being there for her! I ended the night getting to eat steak cooked by my oldest. The best part of my day was getting to read to my granddaughter before bed! I am so blessed ! I am so sorry this day is hard for so many others! My heart goes out to you! Prayers for you always and if you just need to cry 😢 I am here to listen! Life is not fair! Who hates when their child ask them to spell a word? I know I used to just cringe. I don’t know why they could not just sound it out! I love when I get messages like this! This was a message from one of my first clients I used to work with!! To put it bluntly, she hated coming to be! It took so much of my energy trying to come up with ways to teach her that was fun! ( as fun as “plumbing “ can be) This is the analogy I use about the way my kids feel about coming to “tutoring” There are not many people who enjoy unstopping a toilet! Seeing this brought back memories to me. I remember having a conversation with my mom in the grocery store. I wanted her to buy this and she told me that it was too inexpensive. This is hard. I heard this so many times and I so wanted to believe it. But at eight years old my trips were still not reading like they should have been. Yes sometimes we push reading too much when kids are not reading at 3-4, but at 6 if they are still struggling we need to get them help. Early intervention is the key! 🔑 but if we just keep waiting their self esteem has been affected so much that it’s hard to turn back the clock. Also, they will hate to read! Do you want your kid to write letters but they are not interested? One of the best things you can do is give them a piece of chalk and have them write the letters very big. Maybe have them put their body into the shape of the letter in the driving. When you use those gross motor muscles you help to cement the shape of the letter into the brain. I know it is weird to say, but if this word was not irregular it would be spelled this way! For example, “caught” would be spelled (k) ( au) ( t). This will help them remember how to pronounce the word and then they can memorize how to spell it. Many kids have no ideas how to say it because it does not follow the patterns. I could not help but think about Thomas the pastor of the small church in Guatemala we visited on spring break. He has so many reasons to fear but he has hope! Because he lives we can face tomorrow! I never thought this would happen! For six years my son used to live in San Francisco. On his birthdays and lots of holidays he spent his time alone. This was hard on a mom’s heart! I remember one year I ordered something at a restaurant and them it was his birthday and he went to pick it up! My mother was also worried about him! Then the pandemic happened and my mother passed away! Luckily, because of the pandemic he could work anywhere and decided to go move to Austin. The timing was perfect because we were cleaning out my mom and dad’s house. During that time he decided to change his life. He decided he wanted to learn how to be social and he took a class to learn how! He decided to take dance and improv classes! This is where he met Cassandra! A perfect example of how life can change if you decide that you want it to change. I am so proud of him for deciding to change! My mom is also smiling today in heaven! My daughter asked me a question at the beginning of the year! How many books do you read a year? I told her I have no idea! 🤷‍♀️ I have never thought about keeping track! Most of the time I like listening to books so I do that allot of times rather then watching TV. As you can see I have listened to five books since the beginning of the year. I have also read two other books. One about where our beliefs about Jesus come from. I am also reading Catching Fire one of the hunger games books with one of my clients. I am waiting to watch the movie again after we finish the book. The Readers and the Lies my Teacher Told Me are books my trips had to read at college. It was good to listen to these books and discuss them with the trips. My Future Self is my favorite self help book right now and I gave it to my oldest who is just starting his own business. I really enjoy the book about Rob Lowe, maybe because he turned 60 like me this year . I loved sharing his ideas with my theater son. The Reader confirmed again for me the belief and bond that happens with reading aloud. Sometimes we don’t value it enough. This book would probably be a banned book on high schools but I liked it. The Writing Revolution gave me some new ideas about teaching writing to kids. I guess 7 books since January is not bad!!! I was never a reader growing up but the older I get the more I enjoy it. If you could be any type of animal for the day, what would you be? I think I would be like Daisy. She gets sleeps all day and she hides when someone scares her. I would not like the being scared part. (this is a prompt from A Year of Writing- 365 creative writing activities Book) I know we worry about our kids learning how to write. It is one of the hardest things to teach but it starts by just asking questions and getting kids to talk. Then as they grow older we help them with organization of their writing ideas!
